Dance and Music Many traditional and
contemporary dances are parts of Haryana’s culture. It is impossible to
separate the love and enthusiasm of people towards these art forms from the culture of Haryana. Traditional dances include Dhamal, Loor, Khoria, Saang, Phag, and Ratvai. All these dances are performed in festive seasons or on special occasions. These dances are just not forms of recreation but something needed to release the physical and emotional energy.
Arts and Crafts Haryana is famous for its rich art and crafts. Phulkari is an extraordinary handicraft
full of magnificent colours and intricate embroidery. The state is
quite famous for its woven work, be it shawls, dhurries, robes or
lungis. The Haryana shawl is a spectacular piece of clothing embellished
with diverse figures of birds, trees, flowers on the sheet of cloth. It
has great demand in international market.
Pottery is essentially
a village craft, and Haryana is not exception to this. The potter’s
wheel, dating back to pre-Aryan times, is the most common feature of any
village in Haryana. Painting and making stone sculpture are other art forms which are being performed from ancient times.
CuisinesHaryana being an agrarian state has retained its simplicity
in its cuisine. The 'Land of Rotis' is an appropriate title for Haryana
as people are fond of eating different kinds of rotis (chapatti) here.
Wheat rotis are common and so are “baajre ki roti”. In earlier times
rotis were made from a flour of wheat, gram and barley, a truly
nutritious and healthy combination.
Fresh vegetables are the
main constituents of Haryanvi cuisine which is primarily vegetarian.
Dals are not consumed daily and vegetables seasoned lightly are
preferred. Tinda, ghia (kind of sweet gourd) and other seasonal
vegetables constitute a major part of the daily diet in Haryana. People get great pleasure in consuming milk and milk products as these are easily available. The various kinds of cuisines prepared in Haryana are:
